Goalkeeper drama in Roma’s Europa League game

On Thursday night, French side travelled to the Italian capital in their second Europa League game of the season against Roma. In the 81st minute Roma received a much-needed penalty as their French opponents had a 1-0 advantage. Up stepped Artem Dovbyk but his penalty was saved by Berke Ozer. However, Lille’s number one was deemed off his line, so Dovbyk would get another attempt from the spot. Comically, it was the exact same outcome, so the penalty would be taken for a third time.

To add to the intrigue, there would be a different taker this time. For the third, and final kick, Matias Soule stepped up to take the highly anticipated third penalty in the space of minutes. If Ozer hadn’t already created a headline story, he confirmed his name in the papers as he saved yet another penalty, this time keeping his feet on the line and sending his fans wild once again! Possibly one of the craziest few minutes in football history, the three saves were the determining factor that confirmed all three points for Lille on their European travels.

Lammens makes anticipated debut

On Saturday, Senne Lammens made his Manchester United debut against Sunderland at Old Trafford. After Andre Onana’s departure and Altay Bayindir’s recent struggles, the United supporters had been looking forward to seeing their new Belgian goalkeeper in action. Manchester United gained a vital three points and Lammens kept a clean sheet, as well as making a few saves which impressed the Red Devils’ faithful. Manchester United’s next game is the North West derby against Liverpool and after his debut, Lammens may get the honour of playing in it.

Mamardashvili makes Premier League debut

On Saturday night, Liverpool travelled to the capital to play Chelsea after losing their last two games. If they were to change their fortunes, they were going to have to do it without Alisson after the Brazilian came off injured against Galatasaray midweek. In his absence, Giorgi Mamardashvili started his first Premier League game after making his Liverpool debut a week earlier in the EFL Cup.

Unfortunately for the Georgian international, his side lost another Premier League game late on, but the goalkeeper gained praise from Liverpool fans as he made numerous impressive saves. Mamardashvili will be Liverpool’s interim number one, until the middle of November, when Alisson is expected to be fit enough to start between the sticks.

Brentford announce passing of Head of Academy Goalkeeping

Brentford tragically announced the death of Head of Academy Goalkeeping Christopher Ramsey on Friday night. It seems fitting to share the club's tribute to the Australian coach below. Our thoughts, and those of the goalkeeping community, are with his family and friends at this unbelievably difficult time.

'Chris joined Brentford in June 2023 as academy professional development phase (PDP) goalkeeping coach before being promoted to head of academy goalkeeping in July 2024.

In his time with us, he played a vital role in the restart of the Academy, working closely with players and staff to help establish the culture and standards that will shape the future of Brentford.

Growing up in Western Australia, the dream of working in English professional football seemed a world away for Chris. But he moved to the UK in 2009 and dedicated himself to both playing and coaching. From Chelsea Foundation and Fulham to Brentford, his story was one of relentless perseverance, learning, and a passion for developing young goalkeepers.

At Brentford, Chris quickly became far more than a coach. Players and staff speak of someone who was not only deeply knowledgeable and committed to his craft, but also a caring, generous and supportive figure who built meaningful relationships with everyone he worked alongside.

His approach to goalkeeping was as much about partnership and trust as it was about technique, reflecting his humility and the respect he had for his players.

It is no surprise that Chris left such a lasting impression in such a short space of time. His influence on the young goalkeepers, his colleagues, and the Academy as a whole cannot be overstated.

He brought with him not only expertise but also warmth, humour, and an unwavering dedication to helping others succeed.

During his time at Brentford, he worked with goalkeepers from first-team level downwards. He built a strong relationship with first-team goalkeeping coach Manu Sotelo and helped develop our cohort of Premier League keepers. He ensured that the work being done to prepare goalkeepers for Premier League action was replicated at the youngest age levels, building a pathway for the future.

Interim academy director Jamie Greenwood said: “Chris was a great man, leaving a lasting impression on everyone he came into contact with. Goalkeeping was his passion, and he had such a positive impact on both players and staff.

“His character and work will live on through our young goalkeepers and coaches.”

Sheffield Wednesday bring in goalkeeper coach

Mired in turmoil off the field, struggling Championship side Sheffield Wednesday have strengthened on it by appointing experience goalkeeper coach Darryl Flavahan to lead the first team goalkeeper department following his departure from Plymouth.

Flahavan arrives at Hillsborough for his second stint having worked in the same capacity for a brief spell under Garry Monk in 2020. The 46-year-old completes manager Henrik Pedersen’s coaching staff following the appointments of Craig Mudd and Pete Shuttleworth.
