Chelsea Women's manager hits back at Earps' autobiography admissions
Leading figures in the women's game have hit back at Mary Earps following the release of extracts from her autobiography, in which she has criticised England manager Sarina Wiegman's handling of Hannah Hampton's promotion to the national number one spot.
Writing in her book All In, which is out next week, said Hampton's recall to the national team did not make her 'feel comfortable' after the 'disharmony the squad had felt before'. Hampton had previously been dropped from the national set up for reported attitude issues.
‘I felt protective of the good energy we now had in goalkeeper training and the morale of the wider team,' she explained. ’Bad behaviour is being rewarded.'
Hampton began to get more opportunities with England in 2024 and, when handed the starting spot, Earps admitted that it felt ‘unjust. My eyes welled with tears. It was a choice that went against my core values. The affinity I had for Sarina and this job - one I'd given every last cell of myself to - was being destroyed, the trust and respect evaporating.'
Late last week, Hampton's manager at Chelsea, Sonia Bompastor, commented that 'we are talking about Hannah, but also I want to raise my voice for Sarina [Wiegman]. When you use some words about someone who won the Euros three times in a row, you should probably think about it before you speak.
‘If you look at what Hannah said in her previous comments about Mary Earps, then what Mary is saying about her now - one of them is class, and Hannah is the class one.’
Napoli goalkeeper saves a penalty for the second game in a row
On Tuesday, Napoli played on the road against Lecce in the hopes of keeping their title challenge very much alive. Napoli's goalkeeper, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, not only kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win but also denied the opposition from the penalty spot in the 56th minute.
Four days later, Napoli hosted an inform Como side with the opportunity to regain their place at the summit with a win. Unfortunately for the 24/25 Scudetto winning side, they could only come out of the game with a point, but Milinkovic-Savic did keep another clean sheet and denied another spot-kick. Incredibly, the Serbian saved another penalty four days after the last when he denied Morata’s in the 26th minute. It's been some week for the Napoli number one!
Tottenham goalkeeper retires to pursue another passion
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman has retired at the age of 27 to pursue his passion and interest of photography and film directing. The boyhood Tottenham fan lived his dream of being a part of last season's Europa League winning side, the club’s first trophy in 17 years, and then hung up the gloves months later.
It has been well known amongst the Tottenham fan base that Whiteman has a strong passion for films, as he posts film reviews on social media and has interviewed fellow teammates on what their favourite films are. Could we see a Europa League winner win an Oscar in future?
Sam Johnstone says his side ‘should be embarrassed’
England international, Sam Johnstone has given his honest thoughts on his Wolves side’s loss in West London, on Saturday afternoon against Fulham. Johnstone has played all of Wolves’ last five Premier League games since keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win against Everton in the EFL cup. Despite the team’s success in the cup competition, they still haven’t won a game in the Premier League and that streak continued this weekend as Fulham beat them 3-0 at Craven Cottage.
Johnstone was interviewed after the game, and he stated that himself and his teammates should be embarrassed. Wolves next game is against Chelsea at Molineux where the Englishman will be looking to deny the threat of a stacked Chelsea attack. Since the game, Wolves have parted ways with manager Vitor Pereira.
Emiliano Martinez experiences Halloween a day late
Aston Villa travelled to Merseyside last night with the aim of prolonging Liverpool's recent struggles. Just before the half-time break, Martinez attempted to play the ball out from the back, but his misplaced pass found its way to Mo Salah who pounced at the opportunity of an open goal. It was something of a horror show from the Argentine goalkeeper which ultimately contributed to the end of Villa’s unbeaten domestic run and may have sparked the revival of Liverpool’s domestic form.
