Mamardashvili saves penalty in Liverpool's defeat at the Etihad

Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardashvili prevented Manchester City from taking an early lead in their 3-0 win over the reigning champions on Sunday evening. After VAR awarded a rather harsh penalty against Mamardashvili, Erling Haaland - normally so dependable from the spot - stepped up to take.

His penalty, hit low towards Mamardashvili's left hand corner, was met with two big hands from Liverpool's goalkeeper, instantly redeeming him. Before Mamardashvili's save, Haaland had only missed two of the nineteen penalties he'd taken in the Premier League. Alas, an early bright moment was not enough for Mamardashvili and the Reds, who headed back to Merseyside empty handed as their stuttering run of form continues.

David Raya and Kepa help achieve Arsenal history

During the week, Arsenal travelled to Prague looking to maintain their perfect start to the Champions League initial phase. Arsenal, despite injuries to key players, showed the composure and solidity that has been a part of their game all year, as they cruised to a 3-0 win over opponents who didn’t have a shot on goal until the 95th minute. As a result of their 3-0 win, it meant Arsenal had created an impressive record for their club’s history books.

It was the first time in the club’s 139 year history that they had won eight games in a row without conceding a single goal. David Raya has played in seven of those games, but credit also must go to Kepa who played in the EFL Cup against Brighton, a game in which he made many great saves. Despite the recent defensive record, it came to an end last night as Dan Ballard scored for Sunderland in a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Stadium of Light.

Nick Pope makes a return to the England Squad

Thomas Tuchel named his England Squad for November’s international break on Friday and whilst there were little headlines created on the goalkeeper front, one dropped out from the last squad, and one returned. The player who returned to the squad was Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, who has impressed so far this season with big saves, multiple clean sheets and a Champions League assist to his name.

The player who didn’t make back-to-back England squads was James Trafford, who has lacked minutes for his club since the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma at Manchester City. Another well-known name to miss out on the squad is Aaron Ramsdale, who has only played for Newcastle in the EFL Cup this season. At this moment in time, Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson’s position in the World Cup squad seems a certainty but the third spot is very well up for grabs.

Copenhagen goalkeeper has night to forget in North London

On Tuesday night, Danish side, Copenhagen travelled to N17 for a Champions League tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Tottenham opened the scoring through Brennan Johnson after he dribbled past Copenhagen goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski, leaving him with an open goal. During the beginning of the second half, Kotarski’s day went from bad to worse when he lost the ball to Randal Kolo Muani on the edge of his penalty area, which ultimately led to a Wilson Odobert goal. Copenhagen were ultimately beaten 4-0 by a Tottenham side on fire throughout the course of the evening.

Thibaut Courtois heroics not enough to save Los Blancos

On Tuesday night, Real Madrid travelled to Merseyside to play Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield. The Spanish side were under pressure throughout the game, and despite losing 1-0, Courtois once again shone against Liverpool, making a string of brilliant saves. Courtois has a good track record against the Reds, with the most memorable appearance being the 2022 Champions League final. Despite going back to Madrid empty handed, he reminded everyone why he undoubtedly holds World Class status.
