Tunisia goalkeepers make World Cup qualifying history
During the international break just gone, Tunisia’s World Cup qualifying campaign came to a successful end in their tenth game against Namibia. Tunisia confirmed their ticket to North America with games in hand, but they still had something to play for - a feat no country had ever achieved - qualifying for the World Cup without conceding a goal.
Yes, that’s correct Tunisia didn’t concede a goal in their ten qualifying games as their final one ended in a 3-0 win, cementing their names into the history books.
Tunisia rotated between two goalkeepers throughout the qualification process. Aymen Dahman played seven and kept seven clean sheets. Bechir Ben Said played three and kept three clean sheets. If this achievement wasn’t already impressive enough, consider their World Cup journey started in 2023, and they have had to play AFCON qualifies on top of World Cup ones. Whoever gets tied against this side in the summer are going to have to face a serious threat to the forward line.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper joins new club
Sergio Romero, formerly of Manchester United between 2015 and 2021, has found himself a new club in his home country. The Argentine’s last club was Boca Juniors but after getting dropped by a new manager in 2024 and undergoing surgery on a knee injury, he left in the search of a new adventure. That new adventure will continue in Argentina but with Argentinos Juniors where he made his debut in a successful 3-1 home win over Newell’s Old Boys, taking his new side up to second in the table.
Premier League player became goalkeeper to ‘avoid running and being substituted’
Manchester United’s new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens made his debut for the club against Sunderland, just before the international break, and kept a clean sheet as he impressed his new fans. He followed that up on Sunday afternoon with a solid performance against Liverpool in United's 2-1 win at Anfield. It was revealed last week that the Belgian hilariously became a goalkeeper to ‘avoid running and being substituted’, according to his brother Tom, in an interview with The Athletic. The new arrival must have hated his first few weeks on the bench as a Red Devil but now he is finally avoiding running (somewhat) and being substituted.
Matz Sels makes error as Ange’s Forest novella comes to an end
The first Premier League game of the weekend saw Chelsea travel to the City Ground to take on Ange’s struggling Forest. In the days building up to the game, it was being reported that Evangalos Marinakas was looking at the possibility of sacking the Europa League winning gaffer despite only managing seven games.
However, Ange was given another opportunity to prove his worth against the World Champions. Unfortunately, for the Australian, his goalkeeper didn’t do him any favours on the day as the Belgian - who had been so good for Forest since joining - made a crucial mistake, early in the second half, as Pedro Neto’s shot slipped through his hands. That mistake mixed in with the home sides inability to take chances led to another loss and Ange losing his job within minutes of the final whistle. It was an out of character mistake from Matz Sels which he will have to redeem under a new boss.
Neuer breaks Bundesliga record
Bayern Munich's 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund saw goalkeeper Manuel Neuer set a new Bundesliga record. The legendary German now has the most individual wins to his name in Bundesliga history, surpassing former teammate Thomas Muller. Neuer has won 363 matches out of the 530 he has played, compared to Muller's 362 wins in 503 games.
Sheffield Wednesday to bring in new emergency goalkeeper
Crisis club Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly turned to Bristol City goalkeeper Joe Lumley to aid their goalkeeper emergency. Last weekend, number one Ethan Horvath was sent off in the 97th minute of their Championship defeat to Charlton and is now suspended.
Horvath is himself an emergency goalkeeper loan signing, brought in after Pierce Charles suffered an injury. Manager Henrik Pederson now faces the prospect of having to hand a first senior appearance to Wales youth international Logan Stretch - 18 years old and without a senior appearance to his name.
Lumley signed for the Robins on a free transfer at the start of the season, but his appearances have been limited. The 30-year-old is previously of QPR, Middlesbrough, Reading, and Southampton.
