Safonov reignites debate with Chevalier
Last week, PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was unfortunately injured in a 1-0 loss at the hands of Monaco. This meant Matvey Safonov would fill in against Rennes. The game resulted in a 5-0 win for the Champions League holders and fans were very impressed by Safonov’s performance, as he kept a clean sheet, sparking a debate as to whether he is more suited to the role than Chevalier, who has faced criticism this season. Chevalier’s return date is still up in the air but at this moment in time it seems Parisians are happy with their ‘back-up’.
Lloris extends stay in Los Angeles
After 91 appearances for the Black and Gold, French World Cup winner Hugo Lloris has signed a contract extension with LAFC. He will remain at the club through 2026, with an option to extend through 2027.
'Hugo has been an incredible leader and standard-bearer for our team since the day he arrived,' said LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington. ‘We’re thrilled to have reached an agreement for him to remain with the club. Hugo is a person of exceptional character and quality, on and off the field, and he continues to set the tone in our locker room with his experience, professionalism, and winning mentality. His presence is invaluable as we push for even greater success. We couldn’t be happier that Hugo, Marine, and their family will continue to be a part of LAFC.’
Wolves interested in James Trafford
It could be all change at Molineux, with struggling Wolves reportedly interested in bringing in Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford on loan in the January transfer window. At the same time, current Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa is reported to be a target for West Ham United, managed by former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.
Several Premier League clubs are reported to be interested in bringing Trafford in on loan over the winter window. The Englishman has found game time scarce at Man City since Gianluigi Donnarumma arrived late in the summer, and will be looking for match minutes to help his case for a spot in England's World Cup squad.
Nick Pope out until Christmas
Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope will be sidelined with his groin injury for the next three weeks, according to reports. In the meantime, Aaron Ramsdale has started Newcastle’s last three games, two of which the Magpies have won and the other being a draw against Tottenham Hotspur, by virtue of an acrobatic Cristian Romero goal in the 95th minute. Overall, Newcastle fans have been impressed with Ramsdale’s performances and feel he could be an upgrade on Nick Pope due to his enhanced distribution quality.
Donnarumma on the verge of unwanted record
Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is on the verge of being suspended for five yellow card offences as he received his fourth caution of the season last week. The Champions League and EURO winner would become the first goalkeeper in Premier League history to be suspended due to repeated yellow card offences. It's an unwanted record that may be broken in the coming weeks.
